i uploaded a newer version of Translator

this is still just a preview, even it would do most of the planed tasks.

i uploaded a first version of a future antville translator application. the goal is to provide an easy to use web interface for translators, so they don't have to mess around with .properties and .skin files.

please don't check the code - it's a mess so far. but you may test it to get a better idea of what i'm working on.

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR:

i started to change the directory and filename structure. (this is a proposal)

instead of l10n we could also name this "localzations" or "lang" or "languages" or "translations"

every directory within l10n that matches ab || ab-AB(C) will be detected as a new language.

app/l10n/en-US   --> which may be followed by a country code

as michi proposed i did start to split up the messages files and renamed them to always use .properties as the extension. the advantages are obvious:

* messages.en & co don't just contain messages any more
* files become more handy and readable
* there is the possibility of "extensions" properties files
* your editor will recognize .properties files by it's extension

i also moved the skin files to the localization directory

* i would propose to move .skin files away from code (as gobble does)
* with res.skinpath it's very easy to switch between language versions, and to collect the right skins (you don't need to)

i'm thinking about an TranslationItem prototype, which would keep track of changes and updates, which can't be stored within the files. (creator, modifier, accepted, versions, ... )

Hi,

I write following code:

In message.zh: error.test = "someChineseWords"

and

in hac: res.debug(getMessage("error","test"));

It doesn't show Chinese words, some secret code. But if in .hac,

res.debug("someChineseWords");

It shows well...

Maybe getMessage cannot detect encoding...

Cannot load Chinese message i n UTF-8!!

Hi,

I would like to translate antville into Chinese. I translate some .skin files and message file. I create a message.zh file and use UTF-8 encoding.

It loads .skin files well, but cannot read message.zh file.

I use AntClick package and runs under Windows 2000 box.

Hier der Vorschlag, "Du-Anreden" bei den antville-messages zu vermeiden. Weil das in der sandbox nicht richtig dargestellt wird folgt hier das Ganze als Word-Dokument:

Ich schlage folgende deutschen Bezeichnungen vor:

topic: Thema
story: Beitrag
comment: Kommentar
reply: Antwort

Diese Überlegung steht dahinter:

topic wird am besten mit "Thema" übersetzt. Das passt auch deswegen, weil Themen prägnant fassbare Oberbegriffe sind. ("Kategorie" wäre auch denkbar - wird aber häufiger zur Kennzeichnung von Querverbindungen zwischen Themen verwendet. Dieses feature hat antivlle noch nicht.)

Story mit "Geschichte" zu übersetzen ist unpassend und mit "Story" gar nicht zu übersetzen auch nicht sehr einfallsreich. "Beitrag" scheint mir deswegen geeignet, weil "Beitrag" neutral und weit genug ist und weil es sprachlich passt, "Beiträge" zu "Themen" zu machen.

comment zu "Kommentar" ist die direkte und auch hier passende Übersetzung, weil "Beiträge" "kommentiert" werden.

reply zu "Antwort" passt sprachlich und sachlich, weil "Kommentare" "beantwortet" werden.

also from me a big virtual hug and a very thank you to dm42, meisterköchin and dambrink.

i am currently incorporating your translations so that they will be available at antville.org when we do the big update this week.

however, as time went by we invented some new features and thus more messages were needed.

would be great if they could be translated, too (even if it's not before the update – it's easy to add them afterwards).

btw. apologies for the missing carinthian version. i was told that it's not that easy to make it available because carinthian shamelessly was ignored by iso.

Three easy steps to get you started

Download the english version of antville messages to your local harddisk.
Open the file in your favorite text editor and start translating to your target language. For each line, translate only the part within the quotes after the '=' and leave the rest unchanged. For example, in the line

app.data.en.error.error = "Oops, something went wrong here...";

you'd only translate Oops, something went wrong here.... Some messages contain things like <% param.value1 %>. This is a placeholder for a piece of information (e.g. a file name) that will be put in at runtime. You should put that placeholder where it should appear in your message.
When you're done, post the file as a new top level story to this weblog, using the language name as topic name. You can either directly past your file to the story or upload the file as goodie, whichever works better (probably the latter).

Of course, this instruction (somewhat intentially) makes it sound easier than it will actually be. The really hard thing about translating user interfaces is to find the right way of saying things. But don't let that put you off - there's no problem with uploading translations that are incomplete or not 100% right! The reason we do this on a public weblog is to get as much peer review and collaboration happening as possible. If you are unsure about the right translation of any given message, just add a visible note so that other people can spot and fill in the blanks. (My favorite way to make things stand out in code is to use things like "???" or "FIXME", but of course you can use anything that works best for you.)

here is my translation :italiantranslation (application/rtf; name="italiantranslation.rtf (1).rtf", 24 KB) . it was heavier than i thought. don't get me wrong, i didn't mind the work at all, just that i am not familiar with databanks and therefor i felt it to be difficult to translate what you (probably) ment.

so if you are planning a trial run, let me know, so that i can see if it turned out the way i hoped it.

Make Antville speak your language

This weblog's purpose is to serve as a hub for getting the antville user interface translated to as many languages as possible. Currently, we have english and german versions of the messages used by Antville. We'd like to add support for as many languages as possible, so if you

speak a language we don't have covered yet
are able to translate from one of the existing languages
feel you have the necessary writing/editing skills for the job

then this is your chance to contribute to the development of antville. Of course, improvements to the existing message catalogs are always welcome as well. If you're interested just leave a message here on the weblog. We'll soon post (simple) instructions on how to get started.
